Tragedy has struck the Olayinka community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State following the death of its traditional ruler, Oba Salman Olatunji Aweda, while in the custody of his abductors.
The monarch, who was kidnapped last month by unidentified gunmen, reportedly died before efforts to secure his freedom could yield the desired result.
According to information obtained by Lagos Reporters, the kidnappers had demanded N21 million, two brand-new motorcycles, and a jerrycan of petrol as conditions for the monarch’s release.
Sources within the community disclosed that residents and stakeholders made frantic efforts to meet the demands, with a substantial ransom reportedly paid in a bid to secure the royal father’s freedom.
However, hopes of his safe return were shattered when news of his death emerged.
The tragic development was confirmed through an emotional voice message obtained from a member of a committee established to coordinate efforts for the monarch’s release.
In the message, the committee member informed residents of the heartbreaking loss, expressing deep sorrow over the outcome despite weeks of negotiations and sacrifices by community members.
The speaker noted that family members, community leaders, religious figures, and other well-wishers had worked tirelessly to ensure the monarch returned home safely, but their efforts ultimately ended in tragedy.
Lagos Reporters gathered that the news has thrown the Olayinka community into mourning, with residents expressing shock and grief over the death of their revered traditional ruler.
The late Oba Aweda was described by community members as a respected leader who played a significant role in promoting peace, unity, and development within the area.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to issue an official statement regarding the circumstances surrounding the monarch’s death or the identity of those responsible for his abduction.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the growing insecurity and increasing cases of kidnapping across parts of the country.
