The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has again maintained that he won the 2023 presidential election despite the Supreme Court’s judgment affirming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory.
Obi made the assertion during an interview on BlackBox with Rufai Oseni, where he revisited the controversial outcome of the 2023 poll.
Obi: “One Day, the Story Will Be Told”
Speaking during the interview, the former Anambra state governor suggested that the official declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not reflect the true outcome of the election.
According to him:
“Forget about the proof. Leave what INEC declared. One day, the story will be told.”
Obi did not provide fresh evidence to support the claim during the interview but expressed confidence that the full details surrounding the election would eventually emerge.
Background
Following the 2023 presidential election, Obi and the Labour Party challenged the outcome in court, arguing that the election was flawed.
However, in October 2023, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeals filed by Obi and other opposition candidates, affirming the victory of President Tinubu and ruling that the petitioners failed to establish their claims to the required legal standard.
Despite the judgment, Obi has repeatedly stated that he believes he won the election.
Nigerians React
Obi’s renewed claim generated mixed reactions across social media.
Cynthia
The commenter linked Obi’s political rise to his appearances on Pastor Poju Oyemade’s platform.
“Every time I hear Peter Obi speak, I must send a special appreciation to Pastor Poju and his team for spotting this depth of intellectuality and giving him several episodes at The Platform. That was a major catalyst that brought Peter Obi into national reckoning.”
Niyi
Niyi criticized Obi for continuing to insist he won despite the court verdict.
“This is the same delusion he preaches to his supporters to keep them in line. You went all the way to the Supreme Court without proof that you won the election, but continue to parrot the same thing everywhere. Such a sore loser.”
Abiodun Bello
Abiodun questioned Obi’s legal strategy after the election.
“You won the election yet failed to defend the result in court. Instead, you went to court to disqualify the winner. Fraud!”
Ayemlo
Ayemlo urged Obi to exercise caution in his public comments.
“This was how MKO Abiola ended up in detention. The only difference is that Obi has not declared a parallel government. He has to tread with caution and apply wisdom when answering political questions.”
Political Debate Continues
Obi’s latest remarks have once again reignited debate over the 2023 election outcome, with supporters arguing that he remains convinced of his mandate, while critics insist the matter was conclusively settled by the Supreme Court.
As preparations for the 2027 election gather momentum, discussions surrounding the 2023 contest continue to shape Nigeria’s political landscape.
