The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a nationwide advisory warning of heavy rainfall and strong winds expected to affect several parts of the country between April 24 and May 1, 2026, raising concern over possible flooding, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to transport and daily activities.
In the advisory released on Friday, acting director Edward Muriuki said rainfall exceeding 20 millimetres within 24 hours is likely across large parts of the country.
He further noted that the most intense downpours are expected between April 26 and April 28, a period that could pose heightened risks in flood-prone and low-lying areas.
The forecast indicates that the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley will experience significant rainfall activity.
Counties likely to be affected include Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Baringo, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, and Samburu.
Residents in these areas have been urged to remain alert due to the risk of flash floods and rising river levels.
In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi County, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Embu, Meru, and Tharaka Nithi counties, cold and cloudy conditions with intermittent rainfall are expected, with occasional thunderstorms likely in the afternoons and evenings.
The South Eastern Lowlands and Coastal region, covering Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale counties, are also expected to experience scattered showers, with isolated heavy rainfall in some areas.
Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya, including Turkana, Marsabit, Wajir, Garissa, and Mandera counties, are also on alert for intermittent rainfall and strong winds that could affect visibility and outdoor activities.
KMD has urged residents across all affected regions to take precautionary measures, avoid crossing flooded roads, and remain vigilant as weather conditions are expected to deteriorate in the coming days.
