Being born into a Christian family meant that I automatically became part of the faith. Both my parents are devoted Christians who attend church every Sunday, and naturally, I grew up doing the same. However, a passage I recently came across in the Bible has left me deeply troubled and questioning my place in the church.
As a woman who strongly believes in gender equality and women’s empowerment, I was shocked when I read a verse that appears to instruct women to remain silent in church gatherings. The passage, found in 1 Corinthians 14:34-35, states that women should remain silent in the churches and should not be permitted to speak, but instead be in submission.
Reading these words made me feel hurt and disappointed. Since both men and women are believed to have been created by God, I struggled to understand why women would seemingly be given a lesser role in places of worship. The verse left me feeling undervalued and raised questions about whether women are truly regarded as equals within the faith.
As a result, I have found myself reconsidering my relationship with the church and even wondering whether I should continue attending services. While many theologians argue that the passage should be understood within its historical and cultural context, others believe it reflects broader teachings about gender roles in the early church.
