Why You Pour Saliva On Your Pillow While Sleeping And What It Means According To Science

Have you ever woken up and noticed a little wet spot on your pillow? That’s saliva, and it happens to almost everyone. It might feel a bit weird, but it’s actually your body doing something normal.

Your mouth makes saliva all the time. Even when you’re sleeping, saliva is there to wash away germs and food bits, and to keep your teeth healthy. Sometimes, your body just makes a little extra, and it can spill out while you sleep.

How you sleep also matters. If you sleep on your side or tummy, gravity can pull saliva out of your mouth. People who sleep on their back usually drool less because their head stays in a good position.

Breathing is another reason. If you breathe through your mouth instead of your nose, saliva can escape more easily. This often happens if your nose is blocked from a cold, allergies, or even the shape of your nose.

Drooling can also happen when your body is very relaxed. When you sleep deeply, your muscles, including the ones around your lips, loosen. If your lips open a little, saliva can leak onto your pillow.

Sometimes, extra drooling can happen because your body is trying to protect your throat. If stomach acid comes up while you sleep, your mouth might make more saliva to protect your throat.

Most of the time, drooling is nothing to worry about. But if it suddenly happens a lot more than usual, it’s good to check with a doctor just in case.

A few simple things can help if you want less drool: sleep on your back, keep your nose clear, and brush your teeth before bed. But remember, a little saliva on your pillow is completely normal. It’s just your body doing its job while you rest.
