Many people start their day by getting out of bed as quickly as possible. However, medical experts caution that this habit can put unnecessary strain on the body, especially during the transition from sleep to full wakefulness.

When you wake up, your body is still adjusting. Systems like blood pressure, heart rate, and circulation need a short period to stabilise. Standing up too quickly can interrupt this process and lead to several uncomfortable or even risky effects.

One of the most common issues is sudden dizziness. This is often linked to a condition known as Orthostatic hypotension. It occurs when blood pressure drops briefly after standing, causing light-headedness or a faint feeling. This happens because the body hasn’t yet adjusted blood flow properly.

Rushing out of bed may also contribute to morning headaches. A quick change in posture can momentarily affect blood flow to the brain, which may trigger discomfort shortly after waking.

There is also an increased risk of falls. Feeling dizzy or unsteady when standing up too fast can make it easier to lose balance, especially for older adults. This is why healthcare professionals often advise sitting at the edge of the bed for a few seconds before standing.

Another concern is the strain placed on the heart. During sleep, the heart is in a more relaxed state. Suddenly standing forces it to adjust quickly, increasing heart rate within seconds. For individuals with heart conditions or low blood pressure, this sudden shift may cause palpitations or discomfort.

In addition, getting up too quickly may leave you feeling more tired. Muscles and joints need a brief moment to activate after rest. Skipping this adjustment period can result in stiffness or lingering fatigue in the morning.

Doctors recommend a simple routine to start the day safely. First, take a few seconds to stretch while still lying down. Then sit up slowly and pause for a moment. Finally, stand up gently and begin moving at a relaxed pace.

These small steps can help regulate circulation, reduce dizziness, and support overall well-being at the start of the day.
