“You Must Remove All Foreigners & Replace Them With South Africans With Or Without Qualifications”

On Monday morning, a self-proclaimed South African employment activist group arrived in the central business district of Johannesburg, armed with placards and raw fury. They delivered an ultimatum to business owners that left labour lawyers and human rights advocates stunned: hire us, or face consequences — qualifications irrelevant.

The gang, which calls itself the South Africans First Employment Movement, is said to have marched through a number of business blocks, aiming their attacks at stores, warehouses, and construction sites that were mostly occupied by workers from Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Mozambique.

The gathering bystanders were informed by spokespersons that every foreign individual must immediately resign from their post and be replaced by South African residents, regardless of whether or not the South African citizens had the same skills, training, or credentials that the foreign nationals previously held. “With or without our qualifications — remove them and take us,” that is what one representative is said to have stated outside of a warehouse in Marshalltown.

By Tuesday afternoon, the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration had acknowledged that it had received a formal complaint from three company owners who had been adversely impacted. Captain Lerato Dlamini, a spokeswoman for the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, indicated that police carefully observed the rally but did not make any arrests. He also added that the gathering technically kept within the confines of what is considered to be a lawful protest. The Human Rights Commission of South Africa said that it was conducting an investigation into the clip that was being shared on various social media sites.

Since 2008, South African communities have been periodically scarred by acts of xenophobic violence, with especially catastrophic outbreaks documented in the years 2015 and 2019. Previously, analysts at the Institute for Security Studies warned that deteriorating unemployment rates, which are currently hovering above 32 percent nationally, consistently reignite anti-immigrant resentment. This resentment is particularly directed toward African migrants, who are perceived as economic competitors by local residents who are desperate for any available work.

Throughout the whole conflict, a Zimbabwean kitchen supervisor who only went by the name Brighton held his identity credentials against his chest. His knuckles were pallid, and his eyes were watching every incoming person. Brighton was located near a side entry to one of the buildings that was being targeted. No words came from him. He did nothing except wait.

Despite the fact that labour law experts have confirmed that no South African employer is under any legal obligation to terminate skilled, contracted workers solely on the basis of nationality, the pressure that these groups exert on small business owners, many of whom operate without legal counsel or security resources, frequently achieves exactly what the legislation prohibits. Without a single complaint ever being lodged, how many businesses silently handed over their employees on the same day, away from any cameras available?
