Former House of Representatives member and political figure Sergius Ogun has expressed confidence in the leadership qualities of Peter Obi, saying many Nigerians believe the former Anambra State governor has the capacity to move the country forward.
Speaking on SYMFONI’s Niger Unfiltered programme, Ogun defended the growing support for Obi, arguing that it is driven by a genuine desire for good governance rather than political patronage.
According to him, the movement backing Obi consists largely of Nigerians who have become convinced that the country needs a different approach to leadership.
Responding to claims that Obi’s supporters are overly loyal, Ogun said their commitment is rooted in their belief that Nigeria needs a leader who embodies integrity, accountability, and a clear vision for national development. “We believe this is the man that can lead us into our destiny in this country,” he said.
Ogun noted that many of Obi’s supporters volunteer their time and resources without expecting financial rewards. He contrasted this with the traditional style of political mobilization, where support is often secured through monetary incentives. He argued that the backing Obi enjoys reflects growing dissatisfaction with the state of the nation and an increasing demand for political change.
The former lawmaker added that Obi’s record in public office continues to attract support from Nigerians across different regions and social groups, including professionals, students, and ordinary citizens seeking reforms in governance.
According to Ogun, many supporters are drawn not only to Obi’s campaign promises but also to what they see as a track record of prudent management and public accountability.
He also dismissed suggestions that Obi lacks the capacity to govern a complex country like Nigeria. Instead, he described him as a leader who understands the nation’s challenges through his consistent engagement with citizens.
Ogun pointed to Obi’s visits to educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and camps for internally displaced persons as evidence of his commitment to understanding the realities faced by many Nigerians.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general election, Ogun expressed optimism that voters would support Obi’s message of reform and accountability. He urged supporters to remain focused on building a broad coalition capable of challenging the ruling party at the polls.
According to Ogun, the growing momentum behind Obi reflects a national desire for leadership that prioritizes transparency, development, and the welfare of ordinary citizens.
