Health and wellness experts are cautioning against the common habit of placing a glass or bottle of water beside the bed overnight, noting that while hydration is essential, improper storage of drinking water during sleep may pose avoidable health and safety risks.
According to general medical advice, drinking enough water throughout the day supports digestion, circulation, and overall body function. However, experts emphasize that leaving uncovered water by the bedside for long periods can reduce its quality and introduce contamination risks.
One key concern is exposure to dust, insects, and airborne particles. An uncovered glass of water left overnight may attract mosquitoes or flies, or collect dust from the surrounding environment, especially in warm or poorly ventilated rooms. This can make the water unsafe or unpleasant to drink in the morning.
Another issue is possible changes in taste and quality. In some cases, water left exposed for long hours may absorb environmental odors or lose its fresh taste, particularly if it contains disinfectants like chlorine, which can gradually dissipate over time.
Health specialists also point out that drinking large amounts of water just before sleep can disrupt rest due to frequent urination during the night, negatively affecting sleep quality and recovery.
In addition, safety concerns have been raised regarding spillage. A glass of water placed near electronic devices such as phones or chargers on bedside tables could accidentally spill, potentially causing damage or electrical hazards.
While staying hydrated remains strongly encouraged, experts advise that water should be stored in a covered, clean container and refreshed regularly rather than left open overnight. Proper hydration habits, they stress, should balance convenience with hygiene and safety to ensure overall well-being.
