For many Ghanaians who lived through the 1990s, certain stories still send chills down their spine. Among the most talked-about names from that era is Dr. Beckley—a man widely believed to be a powerful and feared spiritualist.

Often identified as Sri Yogi Ram Beckley, he gained notoriety in Accra during the 1990s and early 2000s. Unlike ordinary residents, Dr. Beckley was associated with spiritual practices and was said to lead a group known as the Ascended Masters Teachings. However, beyond his teachings, it was the fear surrounding his name that truly made him infamous.

He reportedly lived in several areas, including New Fadama, New Gbawe, and later Sowutuom. In each of these communities, unsettling stories seemed to follow him, creating an atmosphere of suspicion and fear among residents.

Over time, numerous rumors began to circulate linking him to alleged ritual activities, disappearances, and other disturbing incidents. Many locals believed he was involved in practices that required human body parts, with some stories claiming that he targeted vulnerable individuals, including children and women. It was even alleged that he sometimes used deception—such as pretending to buy goods from street vendors—to lure victims.

One widely shared account suggests that in 2002, two teenage girls were reportedly abducted, though one of them managed to escape and later informed the authorities.

Earlier, in 1994, a major police operation was carried out at his residence in Fadama. According to reports at the time, items such as school uniforms and human skulls were allegedly discovered during the raid. This incident intensified public concern and led to his arrest and subsequent court appearance.

He was again taken into custody in 2002 in connection with the alleged abduction case. During that period, he was held at the historic James Fort Prison. Although he was initially denied bail, he was later released after meeting legal requirements.

Despite the seriousness of the accusations, much of Dr. Beckley’s story remains surrounded by uncertainty. Some believe the accounts were exaggerated or influenced by fear and speculation, while others insist there may have been truth behind the rumors.

In his later years, Dr. Beckley reportedly withdrew from public attention and lived a more private life. It is believed that he passed away sometime between 2011 and 2012. Interestingly, reports suggest that his burial was conducted quietly at an undisclosed location, adding yet another layer of mystery—even members of his own family were said to be unaware of where he was laid to rest.

To this day, his story remains one of the most intriguing and controversial chapters in Ghana’s history—blending fear, folklore, and unanswered questions.
