The disturbing allegations have sparked outrage among residents, many of whom took to the streets demanding justice for the young woman after details of the incident spread across the area and online.
According to preliminary reports, the suspect, who is said to be a minor and related to the victim, allegedly assaulted the mentally challenged girl before a further horrifying incident in which she was reportedly forced to drink acid in what residents believe may have been an attempt to silence her or conceal evidence.
The claims triggered anger among locals who accused some family members of trying to hide the matter instead of immediately seeking justice and medical help for the victim.
Residents later stormed a small mabati rental house in Soweto after allegations surfaced that the case had been quietly handled within the family without involving authorities.
Videos circulating widely on social media showed angry residents gathering outside the house demanding answers over the incident.
Some residents were heard condemning those they believed had attempted to cover up the matter.
According to residents, one of the guardians linked to the home is reportedly a teacher at a local school, a revelation that further fueled public anger and concern within the community.
Witnesses said the mentally challenged girl was eventually removed from the house by concerned residents before she was rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital for treatment and medical examination.
Medical reports later reportedly indicated that the victim had injuries consistent with being forced to ingest a harmful chemical substance believed to be acid.
Police officers have since launched investigations into the matter to establish exactly what happened and whether there was any attempt to obstruct justice or conceal the incident.
