A man from Kirinyaga County identified as Dishon Maina has sparked widespread reactions after opening up about his terrifying experience fighting in the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict. The Kenyan returnee claimed he was forced to shoot himself in the leg in order to escape the battlefield and find a way back home alive.

According to Maina, he traveled to Russia after being approached by agents who promised attractive financial rewards and stable opportunities. He alleged that recruits were informed they could earn huge amounts of money if they joined military operations linked to the conflict.

However, he said the reality on the ground was completely different from what had been advertised. Maina claimed he received only a few weeks of military training before being deployed to dangerous combat zones near the front lines.

He described living under constant fear as drones, explosions, and gunfire became part of everyday life. The returnee further alleged that several foreign nationals, including Africans, had been recruited into the war, with some losing their lives during combat missions.

Maina narrated how repeated attempts to leave the military operation allegedly failed, leaving him feeling trapped and hopeless. He eventually decided to injure himself by shooting his leg, believing it was the only way to be evacuated from the battlefield for treatment.

After returning to Kenya, he warned young people against accepting suspicious overseas recruitment offers that promise quick wealth without clear information.

His story has now triggered fresh debate about the alleged recruitment of vulnerable African youths into foreign conflicts, with calls growing louder for authorities to investigate recruitment agents and strengthen public awareness campaigns to protect unemployed young Kenyans seeking jobs abroad.
