According to a report by The Cable on Saturday, June 13, 2026, A Nigerian widow, Ayuba Liyatu, has shared the painful story of how her husband, a military officer, lost his life during an encounter with Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State, revealing the emotional final conversation they had shortly before his death.
Liyatu recounted the tragic experience while reflecting on the devastating impact of the insurgency on her family and countless others affected by years of violence in northeastern Nigeria. Her account highlights the personal sacrifices made by members of the armed forces and the emotional toll borne by their families.
According to reports, her husband was among a group of soldiers deployed on an operation in Borno State in 2010 when they came under attack from Boko Haram fighters. The ambush, she said, proved fatal, claiming the lives of her husband and other military personnel involved in the mission.
Speaking about the moments leading up to the tragedy, Liyatu revealed that her husband contacted her while the attack was ongoing. She said the conversation remains one of the most painful memories of her life.Recalling his words, she said, “Ayuba was killed in Borno state by Boko Haram. He told me that he would not make it out alive.”
According to Liyatu, her husband appeared fully aware of the danger surrounding him at the time of the call. She explained that his voice reflected fear and uncertainty as the situation deteriorated around him.
She further disclosed that during the emotional conversation, he pleaded with her to remain strong and continue caring for their children if he did not survive. Despite facing what he believed could be his final moments, he reportedly expressed concern about the future of his family and the wellbeing of his children.
Liyatu said her husband’s voice trembled as he spoke to her, an indication of the gravity of the situation he was confronting. She recalled that he urged her not to neglect their children after his death and encouraged her to continue supporting them regardless of what the future might hold.
According to her, he also advised her not to allow widowhood to prevent her from rebuilding her life if the need arose. He reportedly asked her to ensure that their children remained her priority, even if she eventually chose to remarry.
