Reports have suggested that some food vendors allegedly use crushed paracetamol while cooking meat to make it soften more quickly, helping them reduce cooking time and save on fuel costs. Paracetamol is a medication designed to relieve pain and reduce fever, not an ingredient intended for food preparation.

Health experts warn that heating paracetamol can alter its chemical composition, potentially producing harmful compounds. Excessive exposure to these substances may increase the risk of liver and kidney complications. Regulatory agencies have previously cautioned against the misuse of medications in food preparation due to the possible dangers associated with the practice.

Another substance of concern is potash, which some people add to foods such as beans, cow skin (commonly known as ponmo), and okra to speed up cooking or achieve a softer texture. While it is sometimes used for these purposes, excessive consumption has been linked to adverse health effects. Medical experts caution that overuse of potash may irritate the digestive system, contribute to stomach ulcers, and place additional strain on the kidneys, potentially affecting their normal function.

These practices may also reduce the nutritional value of food. When substances not intended for cooking are used improperly or exposed to excessive heat, they can become harmful and may contribute to serious health problems, particularly those involving the liver and kidneys.
