The Federal Government has commenced another phase of mass terrorism trials involving more than 600 suspects facing terrorism-related charges in various courts across Abuja.
The latest exercise comes just two months after approximately 500 suspected terrorists were prosecuted during a series of hearings held between April 7 and April 10, 2026.
FG Intensifies Fight Against Terrorism
The prosecution team is being led by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, while the defence team is headed by Aliyu Abubakar.
Speaking at the commencement of the proceedings, Fagbemi said the trials demonstrate the administration’s determination to confront terrorism and strengthen national security.
According to him, the current exercise represents the fourth phase of terrorism prosecutions under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
“The message is clear, direct, and straightforward. It is that the present administration is not taking the issue of terrorism with levity. That is why you see these ongoing trials,” Fagbemi said.
Multiple Judges Handling Cases
The proceedings are taking place simultaneously in several courtrooms within the Federal Capital Territory.
Judges overseeing the cases include:
Justice Binta Nyako
Justice Emeka Nwite
Justice Musa Liman
Justice James Omotosho
Justice Obiora Egwuatu
Justice Ekerete Akpan
Reports indicate that the trials are expected to run for about one week.
At least 58 terrorism suspects were scheduled to appear before Justice Emeka Nwite on the opening day alone.
“Terrorism Will Not Be Tolerated”
Fagbemi stressed that the government would continue to pursue individuals involved in terrorism and related crimes.
According to the minister, the administration remains committed to making Nigeria safer and ensuring that those accused of terrorist activities face due process under the law.
“Terrorism in whatever form or shape will not be tolerated. We will fight with every inch of our blood to ensure that we make Nigeria a safe haven for everybody.”
Recent Security Operations
The fresh trials come amid intensified security operations across parts of the country.
In a separate development, security agencies recently arrested a pregnant woman identified as Hauwa Shafiu for allegedly providing logistical support and meals to a kidnapping gang operating around Abuja. Police said she later gave birth while in custody and is receiving medical care alongside her newborn.
Meanwhile, armed bandits recently attacked Pissa village in Niger State, killing three people and setting several houses ablaze. Security forces reportedly engaged the attackers during the assault as investigations continue.
The latest terrorism trials are expected to test the government’s renewed commitment to prosecuting terrorism-related offences and strengthening Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts.
