In a display of operational superiority and combat readiness, troops of Operation HADIN KAI on Friday, June 19, 2026, successfully repelled a coordinated attack by ISWAP terrorists in the Buratai axis of Borno State, inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers.
The battle, which erupted in the early hours of Friday along the strategic Dutsen Kura and Chara road in Buratai, Biu Local Government Area, has been described by military sources as a textbook example of intelligence-driven defence and rapid counter-offensive.
How the Attack Unfolded
ISWAP fighters, in a bid to test military strength in the area, launched multiple simultaneous attacks on troops’ locations. The terrorists moved in groups, attempting to overwhelm the positions with speed and firepower. The Dutsen Kura and Chara road is a vital link connecting Biu to Buni Yadi and Damaturu, making it a high-value target for the insurgents.
However, the troops were already on high alert. Robust intelligence had flagged unusual movements, allowing soldiers to prepare defensive positions well in advance.
The Fierce Counter-Response
As the terrorists opened fire, the alert troops responded with devastating effect. Ground forces maintained disciplined defensive fire while calling in air support. The Nigerian Air Force component of Operation HADIN KAI quickly deployed Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms, followed by precision airstrikes that disrupted the attackers’ formation.
The combination of accurate ground engagement and lethal air support proved decisive. The terrorists, who had hoped for a quick victory, suddenly found themselves under heavy pressure from two fronts. Panic set in as their ranks thinned and their assault lost momentum.
Military sources confirmed that several terrorists were neutralised during the exchange, with significant losses in both personnel and equipment. The surviving fighters eventually broke off the attack and fled in disarray into the surrounding terrain.
Importantly, no casualties were recorded on the side of the troops.
A Clear Message to Terrorists
The Commanding Officer of 126 Battalion, Lt. Col. Francis Nwoffiah, described the operation as another demonstration of the high state of readiness of Operation HADIN KAI forces. He warned remaining terrorists in the region:
“The Army message to bandits is simple: quit or face your Waterloo.”
This latest success in Buratai adds to a string of recent victories for the military in the North East, as troops continue to maintain relentless pressure on ISWAP and Boko Haram remnants.
The public has been urged to continue providing timely intelligence to security forces while remaining vigilant in their communities.
