Breaking: ADC makes strategic move on Atiku, Amaechi’s bid for 2027 Presidency

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced that the names of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi have been uploaded to the portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the party’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the 2027 general elections.

The announcement was made by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, in a statement posted on social media on Tuesday, June 30. He described the move as another milestone in the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections.

His statement read in part:

“This marks another important step in our preparations for the 2027 general election and our commitment to offer Nigerians a credible alternative built on competence, unity, and national renewal.”

The development comes as Atiku has repeatedly reaffirmed his determination to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Tinubu defeated Atiku in the 2023 presidential election, while Amaechi lost to Tinubu during the APC presidential primary.

Nigerians React

The announcement has generated mixed reactions from Nigerians.

Chief DB. Damba praised the move, saying:

“Whatever game the Atiku and Amaechi team is playing, I like it. It’s keeping everyone on their toes, especially those who want the official announcement so they can begin to downplay the ticket. Keep this up, Bolaji. May ADC succeed.”

Oluwasegun argued that Atiku’s participation could ultimately benefit Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC):

“Atiku on the ballot is a blessing to Peter Obi. He will help split some North East and North West votes that APC could have benefited from. This is why President Tinubu was allegedly trying to block Atiku from appearing on the ballot.”

Dr Ben Ameh questioned Amaechi’s acceptance of the vice-presidential slot:

“@BolajiADC @ChibuikeAmaechi Politicians are all the same. Amaechi, who said he did not buy a form to become a vice-presidential candidate and insisted it was the South’s turn to produce the President, has now accepted the vice-presidential slot. Politics never ceases to surprise.”

Shareef Na’Ibawa expressed optimism about the party’s chances:

“Congratulations to all Nigerians. We are going to be saved from hardship, the tax reform bill and many more, In Sha Allah. My vote and my family are for the AA movement.”

Earlier, Atiku Abubakar also accused President Tinubu of undermining democracy through alleged plans to deregister the opposition NDC, warning that weakening political competition could push Nigeria toward a one-party state ahead of the 2027 elections.
