A major new twist has emerged in the prolonged leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as one faction of the party has formally adopted former Presidential candidate Dumebi Kachikwu as its sole presidential flagbearer for the 2027 general elections.
The development follows a convention held by the faction that dissolved the leadership structure associated with former Senate President David Mark and elected new executives, including Abdulkadir Bashir as National Chairman.
This move comes despite David Mark’s faction still enjoying recognition from INEC, deepening the confusion within the party.
The ADC has been embroiled in a fierce legal battle between the David Mark-led group and the faction loyal to Nafiu Bala and others. Multiple court rulings, including interventions by the Supreme Court and Federal High Court, have failed to fully resolve the leadership impasse, with both sides claiming legitimacy.
Political observers warn that the latest twist could further weaken the ADC’s chances in the 2027 polls, as the party risks disqualification or severe internal division if the crisis is not urgently resolved. The development adds to the growing instability in Nigeria’s opposition parties ahead of the next general elections.
