The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has appointed Agada Abuh Theophilus, a popular critic of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as Director of New Media and Strategic Communications ahead of the 2027 general election.
The party also announced the appointment of Brian Dennis as Deputy Director of New Media and Strategic Communications.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 10, NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, said the appointments were part of efforts to strengthen the party’s digital operations and strategic media engagement as political activities gather momentum ahead of 2027.
Theophilus became a familiar figure in Nigeria’s political space following the 2023 presidential election, gaining attention for his consistent criticism of Peter Obi, the Obidient Movement and some of the former Anambra governor’s positions on national issues.
Through his social media engagements, particularly on X, he frequently challenged Obi’s political messaging and questioned the direction of the Obidient movement after the 2023 polls.
Despite his previous criticisms, the NDC said Theophilus brings extensive experience in political communications, public relations, strategic messaging and corporate brand management, qualities the party believes will strengthen its media operations.
Reactions Trail Appointment
The appointment has generated mixed reactions among political observers and supporters of the party.
Reacting to the development, Lagospidia suggested that Obi’s supporters may find the decision difficult to accept.
“Obidients seem to be in a difficult position on this one. Whether they like it or not, they may have to accept the appointment of Theo, a figure widely seen as not being aligned with Peter Obi.”
Another commentator, Nuhu Sada, described the appointment as a sign that political parties are already preparing for the communication battles ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Political communication is becoming a key battlefield, and every appointment signals preparation for what lies ahead.”
However, not everyone welcomed the decision.
A social media user identified as Good News questioned the party’s judgment in selecting someone widely known for criticising its presidential candidate.
“These political parties are one kind sha. So, of all the people to appoint, it is the one who is a renowned antagonist of the presidential candidate you found. I will never understand this insensitivity.”
Similarly, Iwu Nna raised concerns about how Theophilus would now be expected to market and defend Obi’s candidacy after years of public criticism.
“While everyone is angry, here is the real question. Will he calm down to lick his own vomit? Because he clearly has to market and hype Peter Obi, whom he has clearly disparaged on this app.”
Questions Over Party Unity

The appointment has sparked debate within political circles, with some observers viewing it as a strategic move to broaden the party’s appeal, while others see it as a potentially divisive decision that could create tension among Obi’s loyal supporters.
As preparations for the 2027 election intensify, attention will likely focus on how Agada Abuh Theophilus adapts to his new role and whether he can successfully lead the party’s digital communication efforts while helping to promote the candidacy of Peter Obi, whom he previously criticised.
