In a recent statement via his official X account, human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has called for public resistance over the alleged takeover of the Jabi Lake Recreation Park, accusing the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of land grabbing and urged citizens to begin organising against the move.
”We must take back Jabi lake recreation park from @GovWike, the heartless landgrabber. let’s start organizing now! #AACOURPARTY,” he wrote.
In his post, Sowore expressed anger over developments surrounding the popular recreational area in Abuja, according to him, the park belongs to the public and should not be taken over or controlled in a way that denies residents access to a shared public space.
The activist described the alleged action as unfair and insensitive, he accused Wike of acting without considering the interests of ordinary residents who use the park for relaxation, exercise, and social activities, he argued that public recreational spaces are important for community life and should be protected from private or political interests.
He called on citizens and activists to mobilise in defence of the park, according to him, public pressure and organised civic action are necessary to stop what he described as attempts to take over public assets meant for the people.
The activist maintained that leaders should prioritise policies that improve public welfare rather than actions that create tension between government and citizens, he warned that removing or restricting access to recreational spaces could negatively affect the quality of life in the city.
