According to a report by The Sun on Thursday, May 7, 2026, former President Goodluck Jonathan has advised youth groups urging him to run in the 2027 presidential election to focus first on obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards and actively participating in the electoral process.

He gave this advice on Thursday in Abuja while receiving delegations of young supporters who visited his office to appeal for his return to contest for the presidency.

In his response, Jonathan emphasized that contesting for the nation’s top office is a weighty responsibility that should not be treated lightly or approached without careful consideration.

“You are asking me to come and contest the next election. Presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you and I’ll consult widely,” he said.

The former president urged the youths to demonstrate genuine commitment to democratic principles by registering as voters and taking part in elections, rather than limiting their involvement to making political appeals.

He noted that many young Nigerians often demand change but fail to fully engage in the democratic system that enables such change, highlighting the need for increased participation in elections.

Jonathan underscored the importance of peaceful and transparent elections as a cornerstone of effective governance, explaining that capable and patriotic individuals are often discouraged from entering politics when electoral processes lack credibility.

He also raised concerns about low voter turnout in Nigeria, describing it as among the lowest he has observed when compared to other African countries and parts of Southeast Asia where he has monitored elections.

He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to examine the underlying causes of low voter participation and develop sustainable solutions.

Jonathan expressed worry over how Nigerian youths are treated abroad, stating that the level of disregard they encounter internationally should come to an end, while linking the situation to leadership shortcomings that have affected the country’s global image.

Despite increasing calls for his return to active politics, he reiterated that he would not make a hasty decision and would continue consulting widely before taking any step regarding the 2027 election.
